A very short read. Lovely illustrations. I would recommend it to those who read books on zen, meditations, and the spirit of the samurai as it is very much a Way of the Bow story.

In the The Archer, a young man seeks the wisom of his master, a famous archer, of the way of the bow. Beyond a skill, this novella covers the master imparting his wisdom to the young man in the course of a conversation. Beyond simply the art of archery, Coelho’s inpriration comes from the lessons of archers and translates it to be for anyone in the pursuit of the creatives. 

 

This novella was quite short with each page containing a tidbit of wisdom from the archer alongside a beautiful illustratiion from Christoph Niemann. Many of the sayings were generic but I appreciated it nonetheless as good reminders for anyone pursuing a craft. Though I disagree with many of Coelho’s new age philosophies, much of the advice given still holds for anyone wanting to craft their skills. Esepcially as I’m working through my own works of writing. 

 

I liked the book for it's beautiful prose and illustrations, but it felt like I would have enjoyed reading the work of where it was inspired from, Zen in the Art of Archery, if it went into more depth on the the art of archery itself.

Dit boek was totaal anders dan ik had verwacht, maar het heeft me positief verrast! Op basis van de achterflap verwachtte ik een (‘regulier’) verhaal met bepaalde levensthema's. In het begin voldeed het daar ook aan, maar na ongeveer vijf pagina's stopte het verhaal en veranderde het in 'wijsheden' die de boogschutter aan de leerling overbracht via quotes en gezegden. Deze inzichten zijn te vertalen naar andere levensthema’s en deden me denken aan de boeken van Haemin Sunim. Het was een prachtig zenboek waar ik enorm van genoten heb.

Een boek dat lijkt alleen over de kunst van boogschieten te gaan, maar het gaat op punten veel dieper. Het is filosofisch, zen, en ja, misschien ook soms een tikje saai. Haha. Soms moest ik gewoon stukken herlezen omdat mijn hoofd zoiets had van, ja dat is niet interessant, welterusten. Maar vaak waren de stukken erg interessant en ik vond het mooi hoe de schrijver zoiets als boogschieten op zo'n diepe manier kan beschrijven. Ook het proloog en de epiloog waren een leuke toevoeging.
En dan zijn er nog de illustraties, niet altijd mijn kopje thee, maar toch ook best mooi en passend bij het gevoel dat je krijgt van het boek.
Blij dat ik de gok heb gewaagd met dit boek.
