  • wouldn’t recommend as someone’s first beowulf translation, but definitely worth your time once you know the poem
  • wish i had read a more traditional translation more recently, to better compare and contrast
  • like the various ‘i’s. it’s so true of beowulf as a story told and retold and retelling, although i could have done without some of the asides
  • also found myself resistant to the choice to title every piece. i did like the fact and way it was divided into poems, but their titling was intrusive on the flow
  • conjures some real rich, ripe descriptions

First read: Seamus Heaney translation, which is lovely and lively.

Second read: Meghan Purvis translation, which is interesting but I did not like the Christian elements grafted onto the story.

That was such a cool version of the original epic, and I totally enjoyed it, as (probably) my last book of the year.
