Bree Paulsen is my favourite graphic novel artist ever. There’s just something about the thick, rough outlines and rich colour palette. I’m obsessed. So it will be no surprise to anyone that Garlic & the Witch was a massive hit with me! The story had a really sweet, reassuring message about how it’s okay if you’re not ready for change because you will BE okay if things DO change. I also loved that Garlic went so far out of her comfort zone again! Her character development since the first page of book one in this duology has been immaculate. The focus on community was also a favourite part of this novel - I especially loved that the Count was like a father figure to Garlic, and that they have a little valley of family. And the queerness!!
Garlic and Carrot, my goodness. The sweetness and softness of their relationship! The devotion!! The fact that they moved in together and had kids!!!
I simply cannot wait for Paulsen’s The Firelight Apprentice.
