DNF -what a shame since the first book was such a fun read. No voice and the writing is almost completely passive.

Starfall is the spin-off/sequel to [b:Starflight|21793182|Starflight (Starflight, #1)|Melissa Landers|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1456568054s/21793182.jpg|41045510], a book that I read last year and loved. This was one of my most anticipated releases of the year (even if I did forget to add it to my 'New Releases' post) and I hate to say this, but it didn't quite live up to the promise.

In the last book, we were introduced to Kane and Cassia, who were both part of the crew of the space ship, Banshee. Cassia is the princess of a the planet Eturia and was supposed to marry the prince of an enemy kingdom as part of a peace treaty. But she found out that her husband-to-be had some pretty murderous plans, and ran away. Kane, her best friend, went with her. And now they're both being hunted. There's a high bounty for Cassia's capture, and Kane's head.

And all that is great. I knew that from Starflight. I really like the premise and I liked the characters as well. Until, in this book, Cassia became a horribly selfish person who always took Kane for granted, trusted people she barely knew over him, constantly hurt him, called him a bad friend despite the fact that he basically gave up his life for her, and overall, treated him horribly.

I couldn't stand seeing how much she hurt Kane. And I don't think she deserves to have someone like him. I'm going to need a shit ton of apologies from her (to Kane) before I even consider the possibility of her being with Kane. I know it's not my decision, but I don't really care. All I care about is that Kane be with someone who doesn't lash out at him whenever she feels like it.

But those two aside, there are other things to discuss.

This wasn't a bad book. It simply pales in  comparison to its predecessor. Starflight was so great, with the crew being more fun, the protagonists having better chemistry, the story more engaging and the humor more humorous. Basically, everything was better in Starflight.

In this one, the first quarter felt very rushed, easy and... convenient. I didn't care enough about the plot regarding Eturia. I didn't care for the new characters. And the romance wasn't good. I wish we'd seen more of Kane and Cassia connecting, like with Doran and Solara. I mean, I actually closed the book a couple of times to read a few scenes of, you guessed it, Starflight. It makes me kinda sad because this is still a good book and all I'm doing is pointing out negatives. I like Melissa Landers as a writer and I hate to be writing a negative review for her novel, but it is what it is.

Overall, this is a book that I'm disappointed by. I might have liked it more if I didn't expect so much from it; or less because I wouldn't have care for the last book's characters... I don't know. I can't figure out how to feel about this one.

My Judgement = Clouded.

So I'm gonna save myself the headache by letting my head sort things out gradually, and I'm gonna rerad book-I-shall-not-name-because-I've-already-named-it-too-many-times. I think you should read it too, if you haven't already.

Like the rating states, this book was ok. I loved Starflight, and was eagerly awaiting this companion novel. I was sadly disappointed in the characters - none of the characters felt true to the first book. There wasn't enough of a story to carry this novel, and it lacked the action and humorous banter between characters that made the first book so much fun. Like many other reviewers have stated, the ending felt rushed, and there wasn't much of a climax to the story. It had potential, but just wasn't fleshed out enough to make this story work.

I'm terrible at finishing series I've already started. I really loved the first book in this duology (although I think the author can decide at any time to write another book in this series) and yet it took me a long time to finally pick up this sequel. For the magical readathon I needed a science-fiction book though and it was the perfect excuse to finally pick up this one. It has been rotting away on the shelves for way too long already.

The beginning of this book was insanely promising. We had already met the leading couple of this book in the previous book, but in this book it's finally time for them to get their happily ever after. Sort of. It takes a long time before we reach that point, because the author really does everything she can to keep this couple apart. That made the book a little chaotic at times, but it also made the ending quite satisfying.

I was also really interested in the politics we were confronted with in the first few chapters. I'm the odd reader actually liking politics, especially because it usually forces characters to be not only physically strong, but also smart and cunning. However, out heroine spent more time away with her crew than ruling her kingdom and the politics became more of a side plot than the main plot. It did make a nice comeback in the finale though.

I was a little less interested in Kane's storyline. It was hard to really understand what he was going through. It was hard to understand how he could ever come back from that. It was also hard to keep on seeing him as the love interest of the story. That's totally a matter of personal taste, because the storyline was well done and well thought out. It was just the kind of storyline I personally don't really care about.

However, if the author ever returns to this world, I will certainly come with her!

While I didn't find this as enticing as Starflight, it was still nice to revisit the crew of the Banshee. Check out my full review at Forever Young Adult.
