Essential Bukowski: Poetry by Charles Bukowski is a good fit for those seeking a thought-provoking and emotionally charged collection of poems that explore the complexities of the human experience, delving into themes of love, death, sex, writing, and the struggles of everyday life with a raw, honest, and often humorous voice. An editor once called him a “passionate madman.”

I've read Bukowski's novels before his poetry and you can see those stories in his poetry. However, there are other poems that amazed me that they came from the same man who wrote The Post Office. A great collection of poetry that should both sides.

Essential Bukowski is a collection of Charles Bukowski's most important poems.

Rating a book in this format with lots of short poems is quite difficult as the quality can be quite different from each poem and I found that to be the case in this book. On the whole, the poems were not to my liking; a lot of them were simply too vulgar and had seemingly no point, which really brings down my overall rating. However, a handful of poems are some of the most concise, deep and imaginative writing I have ever seen, such as 'Destroying Beauty' 'Bluebird' and 'Roll the Dice'. it's just unfortunate Bukowski's best poetry is so superior to any other works he produced.
