Steinbeck is one to really make you fall in love with a place. His adoration for California is palpable, and his devotion to portraying it as it was, and stays- unparalleled.  I admire his writing so much- he makes me feel as if I’ve been to the place and time he is writing about.  I also like the way his characters are sort of slice of life/crust of the earth types. Cannery Row reminded me of a coral reef- all different organisms living together in a small area each with their little jobs and habits.  Steinbeck writes with so much empathy towards his characters, and I loved exploring Cannery Row at a time when it wasn’t a bunch of neon signs and kitschy shops.  As a California lover myself, I’ve always felt a resonance with his novels.  They give me a specific feeling that I can’t place or put to words, but I revisit his works often to feel it again.

Messy, sad, chaotic, funny, earnest, cruel, and kind. Maybe not a perfect book, but unquestionably human.
