More like 2.5. Nice writing for sure but just never got into the story at all - never felt connected to the characters. A nice story but felt nothing. I’m sure I’m wrong given it’s a Pulitzer Prize winner but not for me!

For me, reading a book that was written 100 years ago, it took some time to get into the flow of the language. I was glad I read this on my Kindle so I could look up the meaning of so many words we no longer use much. But once I settled into the language of the period, the story was timeless.

Spoiler An ambitious young woman whose life didn't take the path she had imagined, forced to figure things out and provide for her son, who then pours her heart and soul into instilling in him the hopes and dreams that had driven her, all while coming to a place of peace with the life she's lived. It was surprising how much I related to this story, written so long ago.

A glimpse into life more than a century ago, and yet relevant to the struggles of today. Delightful read.

I was deeply moved by this story. It’s hard to put into words just how much I loved Selena DeJong. Oh how strong and resilient women of her generation were. This novel was written almost a century ago and yet it’s timeless and still very much relevant today.
