Camille is realizing that her late husband emotionally manipulated and sexually abused her. No abuse is described, however her inner monologue is very candid and honest as she processes her trauma and works through it with Jacob. All of the sexual content involving him is very consensual and he’s always aware of her reactions and triggers.

It's awesome to see Camille get her story, but I had higher hopes. The main characters have a great physical connection and the book is very steamy, but I felt like the emotional connection was too easy. After her late husband's abuse, Camille places a lot of trust into Jacob very quickly. He's a great guy and all, but we weren't shown how their feelings for each other developed and it felt like their obstacles just fell away. Camille's interest in the burgeoning suffragist movement also felt like a plot device so she had something to do during the day instead of waiting for Jacob to be available. This book is still worth reading if you've enjoyed the rest of the series.

The Duchess Takes a Husband is the very touching, sexy and satisfying end to The Gilded Age Heiresses series. Camille endured a marriage to a much older duke, who expired in the bed of his mistress in a previous book. He was abusive verbally, mentally and emotionally. There are triggers here for sure, but the abuse is off-page and handled with care. Jacob and Camille make a good couple, and their times together teaching Camille that sex can be a shared pleasure instead of being used for her body were very hot. Getting to see Camille get her HEA after three books of witnessing horrible times with her husband was gratifying. I am looking forward to the next series, which is a spin-off.

CW/TW: Spousal abuse off-page

I have read and enjoyed Harper St. George’s Gilded Age Heiresses series and have been eagerly awaiting Camille’s story. I desperately needed Camille to finally get her own happy ending.

The Duchess Takes a Husband exceeded all of my expectations. I adored Camille’s story, her growth, her determination to take back power from all those who made her feel powerless, and to stop allowing the memory of her miserable dead husband to dictate her future happiness.

The first step in her plan to move forward is a scandalous proposition to Jacob Thorne. Camille is afraid of intimacy after the abuse she suffered at the hands of her dead husband and Jacob is the only man she is willing to trust with not just her body, but also her deepest fears.

Jacob is intrigued, but certain it could never work, and after initially declining the proposal, he realizes that they might be able to benefit each other. He will help Camille understand that there can be pleasure in intimacy and in turn she will help him prove himself to a potential business investor by pretending to be his fiancée.

Obviously, their arrangement soon leads to very real feelings, and I adored every minute of Jacob and Camille’s story. Her courage, his patience, protectiveness and care for her, their very real attraction and developing feelings, her journey of self-discovery and healing; all absolutely beautiful.

The Duchess Takes a Husband was a perfect ending to a fantastic series and everything I wanted for Camille. Jacob was the perfect hero, and their happy ending was perfect.
