Re-read from high school. Shakespeare revenge tragedy at it's finest.

This might be my favourite Shakespeare play because of Hamlet's perfect sense of humour and inappropriate jokes. Also, the dialogue is so entertaining. reading a translation does wonders for my understanding of the plot. Also Ophelia. The drama queen of the era. I'd love to drown trying to hang up a crown of weeds on a willow. I'd love to meet hamlet. Yeah he is a manipulative mansplainer, but who cares, he is a good swordsman. When the Shakespeare is Shakespearing vibes<3 Also I found an old, pressed four-leafed clover in the book. so cute

Saw the BBC Film version of this headed by David Tennant and Patrick Stewart and thought it was pretty stellar. Definitely long, definitely long. The metatheatre piques my interest and I am intrigued in the mirrors in this performance's stagecraft and its modern day setting-> the particularly opulent shiny floor and the characterisation of Ophelia was striking. however, the one area I actually was not convinced of in this rendition was of the love between Hamlet and Ophelia. Their intimacy always felt a farce-> her madness and Hamlet's warring with Laertes felt sort of contrived? Compared to Desdemona, ophelia feels actually more hollow, even more hollow than Lady Macbeth to me . Loved the singing and distribution of flowers, however, and the treatment of her drowning was interesting HOWEVER I always felt there was no true love at least in this production-> Compared with Othello and Desdemona or even Macbeth and Lady Macbeth there felt no real time given to her loss-> I felt more for Hamlet's mother. Indeed, the final death scenes feel... complicated and I think the version I watched did not lend them enough gravitas. There is something in how Shakespeare existentially ruminates here with his use of comedy and metaphors of players which feels like a more fleshed out version (obv given it extends throughout the whole play) of Macbeth's final monologue. I think I could learn to love Hamlet. However, the version I saw felt like a mishmash of components and I feel like Shakespeare made this so ginormous that I almost don't know what to grasp onto -> the players, Ophelia and Hamlet, the GHOST (that I don't think is utilised enough or at as many recurrent intervals as I would like but maybe that's because I'm an OTHELLO suck up who loves the constant interchange and parallelism between protagonist and deuteragonist).

HOWEVER the tragicomic sardonic tone of this one was fantastic and I found myself chuckling at multiple moments. Definitely need to watch some lectures on this and reread the text.
