I am maybe a third of the way through this book only, and I am having major issues with it. This is supposed to be a character-driven book, but it's suffering from many of the same things that any badly written book does. If I do manage to read this book in it's entirety and not DNF it, it will be a small miracle.

I HATE books where the heroine is supposed to be a strong, independent woman, and yet all she does is wallow in her own self-pity. Don't get me wrong, losing a child is never an easy thing to deal with, but the whole secrecy surrounding the ordeal in that Sam is completely kept out of the loop is preposterous. ESPECIALLY since Cassie is STILL close to Sam's parents. Let's not even talk about the fact that it's a minuscule town, and this shit isn't going to be THAT much of a secret. Then there's the whole world-renowned animal therapy creator crap, and she's still based out of that self-same minuscule town? Hardly.

And then there are instances where stuff is just blatantly wrong. I am a stickler for authors actually doing their homework. In this instance we have a little dinner party (sorry, 'family gathering') and the mother is trying to play genial hostess and suggests a game of cards. What game? Canasta. Then proceeds to go get ONE deck of cards. Someone OBVIOUSLY didn't do any homework at all if they think you can play canasta with only one deck of cards. Or with 7 people...

Ok, I'm officially DNFing this book at about the 60% mark. I just can't anymore with it. There is just too much annoying shit happening that just isn't realistic. I'm just done.

Onwards and upwards.
