This book could have been 1/2 the size and done the trick. I skipped over a lot of her stories.

Kim Scott’s “radical candor” concept is pretty simple on its face: in order to be most effective, a boss should simultaneously care personally about her employees and challenge them directly. When this happens, a workplace will feel safe, encouraging, and exciting for all involved. Still, striking a balance between being kind and direct is difficult, and much of the book goes into detail about specific situations you might find yourself in at work, and how to structure your team and leadership style to achieve such a balance.
Though I’m not a boss or manager at the moment, I did learn a lot! Many of Scott’s points could also apply to coworker relationships and general work culture. The parts that were less applicable to my specific job situation, and therefore a little boring to me, were the super in-depth bits at the end about type and frequency of meetings between bosses and direct reports, methods of evaluating employees, job ratings and promotion structure, etc. Still, I’d recommend this for its central premise—just approach it with a “take what’s best and leave the rest” mindset if you aren’t part of a traditional corporate workplace.
