I have to say, this series is a guilty pleasure for me. I know I am too old for them, much too old; however, I never read them as a kid and I love to hear about the orphan's adventures! So cute!

In this particular adventure, the three children go to live with their Uncle Monty who is a herpetologist... so in other words, he studies snakes. The kids' arch nemesis takes the place of Monty's assistant and hatches a plan to get at the orphan's inheritance money. It is a great story and a quick read.

Similar to the first book in the series, which the movie followed surprisingly closely, this is a fast paced book. The topic is marketed as being depressing, but I find the adorable characters and their intelligence refreshing. I can see young readers enjoying the voice and appreciating our narrator decoding words for them during the story. I, however, was rather annoyed with the constant need to define words for me. It was a minor annoyance and didn't ruin the book for me.
I would highly recommend this tale of puzzle solving for young readers. Three stars.

Wow, this book made me cry. The part where Uncle Monty died made me cry. :( Anyway, Mr. Poe is a bloody idiot.

Эта часть мне сразу понравилась, потому что в фильме я просто обожала дядю Монти и моменты с ним, несмотря на то, что я ужасно боюсь змей. Не могу смотреть на них или даже думать. Брррр. Наверное, эти книги написаны не для меня, потому что я люблю трагический конец, но это уже слишком. Мне жутко жаль Бодлеров и мне ужасно хочется как-то им помочь, потому что кажется, что граф Олаф непобедим и сиротам никогда не удастся одолеть его. Единственным плюсом в этой книге для меня стал определённо Монтгомери Монтгомери. Я б сама не отказалась от такого дяди, но только с собачками или котиками вместо рептилий. Продолжение я пока читать не буду, потому что ужасно устала от всего этого негатива и хочу почитать что–то оптимистичнее.
Моя оценка — 4/5, мой совет вам: если вы только начинаете знакомство с этой серией книг, не читайте все рассказы залпом, делайте хотя бы несколько дней перерыва между книгами, ибо в них и вправду всё слишком трагично.
