As always, I am so impressed with Amy’s lyrical words and the building of a deep and profound story. There is a ton of biblical allegory as well as Norse mythology in this story and I really liked how she wove this tale together. The pace for the first half is slow and though there is romance, it doesn’t come until the last quarter of the book. I just needed a faster pace and wanted the romance to come into play a little earlier to make me love this story.

Content Notes: Vague open door, kisses

A slow read

The contents were very different from the ones I have used to read. Language Made it a bit tougher to read as it seemed quite old and not as fluent as nowaday One. And I am quite sad to admit that this booke bored mostt of the Time. Yes it was fun to follow the journey of the main characters and their Love story, but it was so much descriptive otherwise I couldnt enjoy it fully.

Any Harmon is a master storyteller. With each new book, I am completely immersed in its pages by her beautiful words. The First Girl Child is another such example of fantastical storytelling and world building that will capture your heart and your imagination.

“We are abused. We are used. We are bartered and abandoned. But rarely are we loved.”

The First Girl Child takes place in the world of Saylok, where the six clans, represented by different animals, live, war, and love all under their chosen king. When a woman falls pregnant, and is shunned by her lover, the fate of Saylok is forever changed.

“I have only ever w-wished for one thing.”
“Tell me.”
“To be here. Near you. That is all.”

This book tells the story of several characters, with multiple points of view. They blend together seamlessly, and I loved seeing into each of the character’s thoughts. This is a story of not just romantic love, but love of family and love of the land as well. And while you won’t find any kind of steamy scenes, the connection the characters have more than makes up for any perceived lack of intimacy.

“My b-body is yours. My heart is yours. My s-soul, my thoughts, my d-dreams, my life. Yours. I will do whatever you ask. Whatever you wish.”

This story is so unique, and it will stay with you long after the last page is read. I sincerely hope there will be more stories from Saylok in the future.

Too many predictable storylines and static characters, but an entertaining enough read.
