A Curse Dark As Gold is a superb retelling of the Rumpelstiltskin fairytale. The best part of this book is that it is essentially a historical fiction/fantasy book, my fav genre! This is beautifully written book marred with tradegy, and the main character Charlotte is well developed and determined. This is a great read for anyone who loves historical fiction/fantasy stories, this one is set in the Industrial Revolution. A Curse Dark As Gold is a complex retelling of the classic Rumpelstiltskin story with mystery, fantasy and a touch of romance. A little on the "dark" side, this is not an exactly a "cheerful" read. I really liked this book, it was a great YA read.

Wow... I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Unbelievably well developed characters. I'm not going to lie, the beginning was rough going for me. I started this book over a year ago - put it down for several months and then picked it back up. I'm glad I did. The story was very interesting, after you get through the first 100 pages of back story and setting everything up then it starts to get good. Fun, interesting twist on good ole Rumpelstiltskin.

Rich re-telling of Rumpelstiltskin.

The first half or more of this book dragged so badly that if I had the capacity to leave a book unfinished I would have done so. In the latter part of the book the writing is lovely and very atmospheric, but unfortunately that didn't make up for the fact I found the protagonist supremely unlikeable and aggressively determined to make the clearly wrong choice at almost every step.

I was so disappointed with this one. It had been on my to read shelf for so long and when I finally got to it, I had a very hard time getting into it.

great storytelling skill. a different version of Rumplestiltskin, with a bit more humanity on the part of the gold-spinning crazy guy.

It was a bit slow at the beginning, but it picked up and had me on the edge of my seat eventually. It is a great story and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

A creative retelling of the story Rumplestiltskin, which didn't quite work for me.
