We speak of death in a grave tone, the very mention of it leeching out life from a room. Before I read Between Life and Death, I always skirted around the topic of death, silently sinking into the shadowy corners so that it cannot touch me. But Dr Kashyap changed my perspective and I'm mildly surprised how my mind has opened up to view death in a holistic manner. I was hesitant to read this, thinking it would throw me into the depths of despair but when I read the last page, I was calmer. Dr Kashyap Patel is a renowned oncologist in the US who works with terminally ill patients in a unique manner. This is his take on how death can be welcomed with peace.

When Dr Kashyap is approached by his friend to look into her husband's case, he readily accepts it hoping he can make the patient's journey a little easy. Harry Falls is recently diagnosed with terminal cancer and has barely few weeks left to live. When he denies treatment, he reaches out to Dr Kashyap about what it's like to accept death. Over the next few weeks the doctor walks Harry through different rituals followed by various religions pertaining death and funeral rites. Through his help, Harry becomes comfortable in discussing his deepest fears, about his views about death and how he can help his family in coming to terms with it. Dr Kashyap teaches his patients to talk about things that are usually swept under the rug.

Between Life and Death was unlike anything I've ever read and I absolutely loved the unflinching manner in which the author decided to address death in its natural essence. I binge read this in two days and couldn't get enough of it. I often wished for it be longer. There's a sense of tranquility that this book carries throughout its length. Not only is he an excellent narrator but he also makes the readers feel comfortable enough to shed their uncertainty, just like kicking off shoes and settling down on a cosy couch. If you're looking for a book that provides a fresh perspective about something as simple and natural as death and the normality that surrounds it, I recommend this to you. I hope you like it as much as I did.
