The same couplets my grandmother and I recited along with the Disney Mother Goose album.

This is a very silly rhyme about the lengths to which Mother Hubbard will go to for her dog. While the book touches on some topics that might be considered out of the range of the typical preschooler (alcohol, smoking, death), these themes are more shocking to me as an adult than they ever were as a child. Mother Goose is full of injuries, hurts and bad behavior of all kinds, but as a young reader all I noticed were the fun rhymes and silly stories. James Marshall brings the necessary humor to his illustrations to provide just the right counterpoint to this silly story, and readers will laugh at the dog’s wild antics and Mother Hubbard’s eagerness to please.
