Absolutely loving that
the only Asian character in this novel is a psychopathic child abuser, as if the overbearing mom isn’t a racist caricature of Asian mothers.
I’m also so sick and tired of these coming-of-age teen novels that romanticize abuse, illness, and sex.

Maddy is also the very definition of a manic pixie dream girl who loves classic literature, has the perfect punchline to any joke, is willing to die for a boy she just met, and is adored by everyone she meets.  She’s boring!!  She’s literally every girl I’ve ever read in every high school romance novel.

Olly’s obnoxious and really weird and I don’t see how he’s supposed to be attractive to any human being at all??

Whatever.  The novel wasn’t the worst thing I read, but it also wasn’t the best.  I hate these trends of teenagers dying (maybe?) of random diseases and waxing poetic (kind of) and using cheap emotional manipulation tactics to elicit a reaction that makes readers think they actually liked the novel.

I'm actually glad I guessed the twist in this book! I was really concerned it was going to end with Maddy's death, so when it didn't (even if I guessed how) I was really quite pleased.
Although the concept for the plot doesn't seem particularly ground-breaking, Yoon invites a lot of emotion into the novel, especially through her use of drawings and pictures. This, coupled with the short chapters, made this book easy to read. Sometimes this can be a bit quick to take in everything, but in this case it just made you feel in line with the characters (especially Maddy) as they journeyed through the book.
I did feel like there were a couple of things unexplained that I'd want answers to. Why is Olly so obsessed with climbing? Did something happen? Why doesn't Carla mention her concerns earlier? Why does Maddy love reading?
