Didn’t grip me.

Main character wasn’t interesting and I felt nothing had actually happened by almost 10% of the book.

This book was a strange mix of unusual plot devices in a super traditional structure. An interesting and well-thought-out world of magic and the occult stuffed into a classic who-dunnit storyline. I’m super appreciative of the main character ... in many ways a foil for the usual lead heroine. I especially liked her potty mouth and general disinterest in saying the ‘right’ thing.
There are a handful of minor things that knocked it back from 5 stars (a few gaps and holes, some flat secondary characters, touchy pacing, a measure of predictability), but my main frustration is that I thought it was a stand alone and it’s soooooo not. So now I’m forced to read more in a series. Not the worst sentence in the world though.

DNF. Just wasn't in the mood. The main character started off exhausted, and I felt she was going to remain exhausted and overworked throughout the entire book. I read fiction to escape, not to reinforce the worse bits of reality.
