Unbelievable that someone this close to the action with his political beliefs survived to tell about it.

Victor Serge has written a wonderful history of what went wrong with the Russian Revolution. He wrote as an insider who saw what went right and how Lenin and then Stalin hijacked the revolution and went into despotism. The important part is how they did this. First they took over education and convinced the masses that their program was the only answer. After that they destroyed the free press by just shutting down any thought or op/ed that was critical of the ruling party. After both the press and the citizens had been conditioned to believe that the government was always right the arrests for dissent began, the terror and the fear started and the country was plunged into darkness. Now think about what has happened in this country over the past 16 years with education. Think about how our current POTUS belittles the press and claims that any actual news that is critical of his decisions is fake news. Are you seeing a pattern?

There aren't enough stars in the rating system to do this book justice. Not an easy read, but definitely an essential one.

For most readers the real meat of this work of personal history are Serge's experiences of the Russian Revolution....
