I'm gonna be honest. I picked up this audiobook from Libby because it fit a Storygraph genre challenge and I know folks enjoyed it when it was released. But I just... I don't know if I can do true crime anymore. I'm glad I ended up listening to the audiobook version of this because I could just kind of turn my ears off and let it play through the bits I couldn't handle. I can see that it was a well-researched and well-written book (and I did really love hearing about Michelle's story), but overall, the subject was just too much for me.

Aluksi en lämmennyt kirjalle lainkaan. Kuitenkin kirja onnistui kietomaan minut pikkurillinsä ympärille aivan uskomattomalla tiukkuudella loppua kohden että huhhuh. Harvoin olen lukenut näin erityislaatuista kirjaa. Kokemusta on vaikea verrata mihinkään aiempaan lukemaani.

True crime isn't something I read often (I have mixed feelings about the genre), but I heard this was very good so I decided to read it. McNamara handled this with humanity, respect for the victims and without sensationalizing the crimes. She always had her eye on ultimately seeking justice and was not interested in personal glory. She also was very candid about her own life and experiences even psychologically analyzing herself. I regret that she didn't live to see him put behind bars, but her work was instrumental in ultimately catching him.

Well researched and well written but failed to capture and hold my attention. 3 stars.

I started it last year and couldn't get into it but decided to give it another shot and I'm glad I did.

It was a great read that had facts, mixed in with memoir, and had a personal touch to it that made it easier to swallow, especially considering how destructive this man was to the state of California.

The autobiographical parts were most interesting, and I was glad I read it given that the ending to the Golden State Killer is coming to a close in real life.
