I couldn't put this down. As harrowing as the events that take place are this is a beautiful story of one mans survival and cunning that not only kept him alive but helped others survive. His determination o survive only grew as he fell in love and it shows that even when the worst horrors are occurring that love can still blossom and create light in dark times.

I wish the characters were handled with more respect and care.

I don’t have words to describe the emotions that this book has brought out from me. I’ve cried multiple times. I almost stopped reading it when
Lale was brought to another concentration camp,
I couldn’t bear it. My heart aches for Lale, Gita, and Cilka,  knowing what they must have gone through from my own research, and reading this particular book. This book tells a story from such a sad and horrifying part of history. However, Lale and Gita’s story is so beautiful and hopeful. I  couldn’t put it down. I read every word in this book, even the afterwords, which I usually could care less about.
How does one even bring themselves to review a book like this?
My only complaint with this book, is just the stylistic choices Morris decided to write this story with. The book is told in resent tense, which I completely understand why Morris made the choice to do so however, as one who reads a majority of books in the past tense, it was a little hard for me to get into the story at first. Once I did get into it, however, as I said, I couldn’t put it down. I would recommend this book to everyone.

I've been wanting to read this book for so long, and I was a little bit disapointed. It comes from the main character : it was hard for me to get attached to him (mainly because of the way he talks about women that I found very patriarcal).
Also I found the writting very simple (it rarely bothers me when I read, but here it did).
This book is not too long to read. Some parts of it are hard as it depicts the life on a concentration camp, but the main focus is on the love story, which, for me, make it easier to read compared to other books with the same subject.
