Too many shifter novels are bodice dippers in disguise. Not this one. There is a lot of meat here, strong plot, great and believable characters, and not a hint of purple. And an amazing change in tone from Muscling Through, both excellent, but worlds apart, one serious, the other amusing. Talented, versatile author.

I really enjoyed the ability to see one of the characters through the eyes of those who live and know him best. It was gutsy of the author to attempt it and fantastically well-done. I think the only thing I wish there had been more of was a longer confrontation with Julian's father.

4.5 stars, rounded up.

Harper wrote an moody, scary, romantic werewolf story. at one point i was so wrapped up in the *big bad* event of the book that i had to set it down & walk away for an hour, i was so scared for the characters!

some of the editing was funky & made it a bit hard to i.d. the POV changes, but it didn't decrease my enjoyment.

i'm sad this wasn't turned into a series

Darker than I expected from JL Merrow.
Nick was a hard character to like at first and it was hard to connect to Julian as we never got his POV. Having the second POV being a supporting character seemed strange at first but having the POV of someone not guided by their wolf was essential and Tiff was an instantly engaging character. In fact the cast of supporting characters were far easier to like than the leads. (Even the grumpy policeman, and yes, I do want to know his story) I didn't really like either of the leads until they stopped letting their wolves guide their actions.
All in all it was an interesting read and different to your standard shifter story.
