Excellent characters and plotting. A great universe. One of the better first contact stories out there.

An Auspicious Beginning

I thought that this was a great start to a promising series. The characters were believable, though I had a hard time keeping some of them apart. The alien language was interesting, but I wasn’t sure why a telepathic language wouldn’t just translate directly to terms we know. Sure, there are aspects that don’t have neat translations that would need new terms, but it always felt a bit odd. The hyper evolved squid was cool, and he’s quite a character. It says something that he and I would be frenemies at best. I’m looking forward to more. It’s been a long time since I’ve picked up a good science fiction read. And even longer since i picked up one in a series that I want to continue.

I loved it. I thought Jane and Ei'Brai are compelling characters, the plot kept me reading, and I enjoyed the level of action.

Foehner Wells doesn't yet have the polish that will come with experience, but Fluency was entertaining and well worth the time.

An epic adventure!

I love the way this author presents a sci-fi fantasy tale! I read this book in two sittings and I was mesmerized. There are so many twists and turns that the book kept my attention all the way through! I am really looking forward to reading the next book in the series. This would make a great sci-show, a movie couldn't possibly cover the scope of this book!

I liked this well enough, but it didn't really grab me. I have the rest of the series waiting for me, so I guess I'll just keep going with it. The two main (POV) characters are kind of cringy in different ways, IMO, and even at the end of the book, when one of them can basically read the other one's mind (or at least emotional state), they don't manage to communicate AT ALL.

Guess I better hide this due to spoilers.

One thing that could have been clearer was how much the alien is influencing their actions. Because of the different points of view, you really wonder at the main girl's motivations (and whether they're being influenced), but from her perspective, she's completely in control. (Or anyway, she thinks she is.) Frankly, it's kind of annoying, and just makes me wish the author would make the alien a POV character, so we'd know.

The final scene where she talks to the earth military folks also kind of upset me, because she doesn't call out explicitly how much she knows about what happened at Roswel. I think she should make it clearer that the alien knows (and/or that she knows) how fucked up that all was, and that THAT is why she isn't trusting them with the ship.

I hope this isn't the case, but right now I feel like there's a real possibly this is going to turn into one of those books where humanity saves the rest of the galaxy because we are militaristic assholes. Again, I hope I'm wrong.

I read and loved this whole Confluence series! It’s my favorite kind of science fiction; spaceships, adventure, well-written women characters, fascinating aliens, unexpected twists. I can’t wait to buy more of her books as they come out.

I’m 3 paragraphs into chapter 2 which is from the love interests’ perspective and I already know I’m going to hate him so I’ll go find another first contact story to read.

You can read the complete review at The Book Chick.

I want to say that i really dont like cliffhangers. If you do need to break up a book in two, do it at least a little more satisfying. It was like just hit pause in an movie and wait a year before you will see the rest. I´m not even sure that I will read the second book. Mostly because I feel such an dissatisfaction. So just two stars.
