Min Hwani after five years away from her homeland goes back to solve the case of her missing father. Upon going home she reconnects with her younger sister Maewol after years of separation to help find their father and solve the disappearance of thirteen missing girls in the process.

This is the second book from June Hur that I have read and I adore how she sets the atmosphere of each book she writes. Her writing draws you into the story right away and I loved how she used an unknown part of history to add to her story. I honestly didn't know about this portion of history until reading the end in the notes about this book, I am really glad that she included this here.

Besides the mystery behind the disappearance of the thirteen girls it also focuses on Min's relationship with her sister Maewol. After not seeing each other for years the two women over the course of the book start to rebuild their bond despite both having such different personalities. They both learn harsh but necessary truths about who their father was and what lead to their estrangement. I loved how the women got along with each other and loved each other despite their differences in how they handle situations.

The one thing I can say is I kind of want some more characters to have a bit more attention like Scholar Yu. I really wanted to know more of his story and what lead him to this village in the first place. I wish some more attention might have been placed on them but other then that I really enjoyed the book. I can't wait to read more novels by June Hur to see what she has to offer!

Different premise & historical setting than most which I liked. You could tell it was well researched
