Let me start by saying that body horror is the one facet of the horror genre that really gets to me, so I felt really brave taking this on lol. It was my goal to read a greater diversity of literature this year, and what a great way to start exploring manga. The art is just as beautiful as it is profoundly disgusting, and the meanings and explanations given by the author add to the experience. Media that puts the fear of death, disease and conflict  (that is innate in humans) to the front is hard to do well. But I loved this and can’t wait to explore the rest.

As I continue to read more and more of Ito's work, I've come to the conclusion that I just don't get the hype. Don't get me wrong, Ito's art style is gorgeous. The attention to detail, the wonderful shading, the lifelike expressions. It's beautiful, but I need more than just art. I think I'd do better with a full-length manga rather than a collection of stories by Ito.

Now, this one was gross. Not in a bad way either. The oil chapter had my stomach turning and bile tingling up throat; I Hate grease with a passion. It did what was intended. I still feel ill as of writing this review. And I rather liked the hanging story and the puppet one too.

Perhaps I need to find a way to make a collection of my own, filled with the short stories of Ito's I actually adore.

Junji Ito is a literal genius! What I appreciate the most about the manga is that he leaves author notes about the stories; how he came up with the plots, and provides sketches with descriptions. Now he writes about "inescapable horror," which are basically stories with plots that really have no explanation of how they came to be. To get an idea, I would suggest watching the anthology anime. The fact there are more stories in the manga really makes you appreciate his artistry and storytelling.

<SPOILER> and CW: There is blood, dismemberment, and gore. I like to think there is a brief mention before it happens. There is also a story with a brief mention of maybe psychosis, but most definitely images of suicide (hanging).

This book hit me and it didn't felt like a kiss, didn't make me shiver either.

Coming into this I just wondered if his short stories were as uneventful as his longer ones.

Unfortunately Ito is a good gore painter, but not much of a horror teller to my taste.
I was really underwhelmed, the characters are drawn the same, and you can see his process as you read- he found something interesting and was more into the drawing aspect then the story one
(he admints that himself- after each story there's an information page about how it came to be, and it's the same story every time)
At this point I've become a hater and I need to stop..
