The characters weren't very interesting and I found it boring

Not a bad book and certainly easy reading, but it lacked a certain something to give it a spark. While the characters were alright in terms of development with some other individuals marking their lives, I couldn't get invested in their relationships and drama. If I had to close the book and not look back, I can't say I'd have suffered much except, perhaps, for the final battle scene...

I'm 62% done with Fledgling: It started off promising but now its dwindled to I AM SO NOT INTO THIS, shame really. It just seems a little weird mainly seems based around actual folk law, which if I was interested in I suppose this book would be fantastic. — Dec 03, 2014

9th January 2015- Finished it and now I must say I didn't really like this book. It just isn't for me, its too weird. I didn't want to read it, I read it because I'd started it and had to finish it. 3 stars because I couldn't care less about this book but it doesn't deserve crap rating as it wasn't Bad, just wasn't my cup of tea

The writing wasn't great, but the story wasn't moving fast enough for it to tolerate.

Well I’ll be damned, that was nowhere near as bad as I thought it’d be. I would have given it a 3 stars until about halfway through. The second half was doubly dumb and incredibly anti-climactic. It didn’t feel like there were really any stakes at play.

Ana was annoying. She was supposed to be 18 and yet she acted 12 most of the time, her sister Eva was actually 12 and somehow way more mature (which was also weird because why is this child making pot roast for everyone????).

Chance was an odd character. I was fine with him for the most part, but his whole story just wasn’t written very well. No one really cares that he’s a shapeshifter. They acted like that secret was on the same level as this girl having a weak heart like?? Also, his nickname for Ana was “my love” which just felt so awkward. A simple “babe” would do, the use of “my love” just felt like the author trying to make the love story so much more romantic but it just didn’t work.

The story just fully disintegrated at one point. Now there was an enemy that had zero buildup and was the least scary person you could ever think of. Then there’s a death which had the potential to give emotional damage but it kinda just happened in the midst of about 10 other things I didn’t care about. I just didn’t care anymore, there was no longer any semblance of a working plot.

There are plenty of other things I can complain about but I don’t have all day (unlike these characters seemingly did(what happened to school? You guys just suddenly graduated and that was it? No job or college for you? Huh?)). I didn’t hate this but I did grow weary, I was counting down the pages for it to be over. Shame.

Liked core elements but rest was bad

I really liked the core elements of this book - the heart defect and the Navajo shapeshifter aspects. I didn’t love the characters. None of them, even the mains, were particularly expanded upon. And Ana and what’s his name (I guess it wasn’t very memorable after thirty seconds) felt instalovey.

I went into this book with high hopes, who doesn't like a shapeshifting story. Add in some Navajo mythology and it seems like a perfect mix. However, what we actually get is nothing close to what this book could have been.

We have Ana Hughes, an eighteen-year-old girl with a life-threatening heart condition. Her family decides to move to Colorado to her family's remote hometown in hopes the mountain air will help with her condition. She decides on a fresh start, where she tries to be normal and hides her condition from others. Here she meets Chance Morgan, who also has secrets of his own.

I will be honest, this book was hard to finish. I found it extremely slow, I kept thinking this has got to get better. Over halfway through the book, we get there. As per usual in any YA supernatural book, we have the overdone instant love plot. Where we get an intense attraction and fall head over heels love story in a matter of days. I had hoped this book wouldn't fall into this overdone genre, but alas we do. The actual relationship between Ana and Chance was very sweet, almost sickenly so. There were good moments that I enjoyed, but I found myself a little irritated with yet another YA love story.

I will, however, give the author credit for writing about the main character's medical condition, I found this at least to be realistic. The fact that we have a young girl, trying her hardest to hide her condition to try and be normal.

Overall I enjoyed the book, I might read the rest of the series. I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.

I did not enjoy this book at all. I liked the idea of it but emotionally, I did not connect with the story or characters at all.

A very slow paced read filled with yet another novel where a girl and a guy are maddeningly in love after about a week. Discussing their relationship and future in such a manner that it annoyed me as how they spoke felt so forced and their dialogues overly articulate for people so young.

Shapeshifters as a main point of focus in a story, while it was interesting, I found that it wasn't implemented very well and the story didn't really gel well. Every chapter felt like deja vu because each was one seemed to regurgitate the same; "...my Grandfather and I went hiking..." spiel.
