I thought I knew where this book was going, but it veered off into the woods and I got a little lost in it. I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this book as much as I did. Very glad I chose this as my Book of the Month.

DNF. This book is sooo slow. I picked it up for Travis’s story and it’s basically about another set of people. I know the spoiler and still can’t get myself to finish.

I love this book. The writing was beautiful and atmospheric. It created the perfect creepy and mysterious atmosphere of the village. The whole time your wondering what is going on here and who are Theo, Callie and Bee. What happened to Travis and Maggie? The pacing was really good and i liked the characters.
My big complaint is I thought that the twist a little too predictable. I figured it out pretty early, but it seemed to me to be a retelling of the M. Night Shambala film The village. If I hadn’t seen it, it may have been more difficult for me to figure it out. I remember the first time I watched The Village I thought the twist was kind of lack lustre, but as time has gone on I really love the idea and the twist of the film. I’m surprised this is the first novel that I’ve seen use it for a retelling.

Who doesn’t love a cult story?
An author disappears. Then, the man hired to find her also disappears. The common link: a secluded civilization in the woods - Pastoral.
Think The Village told from the perspectives of three members from Pastoral: a woman, her husband, and her sister. Each with their own secrets.
Some elements in this story I called, some I could see hints of but couldn’t make out the logistics.
Overall, everything was tied together and was well paced.

At first, I adored this book. The atmosphere, the mystery, the rot, the fear. It all was a recipe for what should have been an amazing book. There were so many tangles and twists that should have made this book wonderful. But, the end ruined everything. The ending was beyond lazy and just so stupid compared to what it should have been. It was such an easy explanation. I was thinking this book would have been some sort of paranormal magical realism story. It should have been honestly. Instead, it was a dumb ending. A simple one, which did this book a massive disservice. Easily would have been a 5 star book, but unfortunately, it's a 3 star. The only reason it's that high is because I loved most of this book. But seriously, the ending RUINED it!!!
