I finally got around to reading this book. It was not something I was going to do as I was never a fan of Nesta, and even during this book she frustrated me to no end at times. It was one of the reasons why I never picked up her book when it was announced. I can say, after reading this I can appreciate the character growth and new characters that we got in this book. There was still moments that really frustrated me because it just didn't make sense and the logic felt gone, but being a book focusing on emotions logic tends to fall away.
After finishing this read I am surprised that this has been my favourite book of the series. The rest of the series scored high but I fluctuate with my ratings. At the moment when I'm reading they are high but when I think back to them they are a solid 3 stars. It is a case of they entertain me at the time but they don't hold up once you finish. This book did not have that problem. I don't know if it is because this feels more character driven than the previous book or that there feels like there is actual consequences to actions and that Nesta doesn't feel perfect (probably all of it), but even after finishing I think this book is still good.

This is only part 1 of the book, but it's almost as difficult to get through as ACOTAR. If anything, it made me dislike Nest more than I already did. I understand what the author was attempting to go for and how she was trying to build a character that is flawed with self-destructive behaviors, but that could've been achieved much quicker without lingering on the absolute most distasteful aspects of her. We still would've got the whole picture.
Hoping part 2 improves upon the faults of this first half. The only reason I didn't DNF it was because I wanted to know what was going on with literally every other character BUT Nesta.

Graphic: Alcoholism, Murder, Self harm, Blood, Emotional abuse, Sexual harassment, Body horror, Eating disorder, Excrement, Sexual content, Bullying, Death of parent, Violence, Abandonment, Body shaming, Alcohol, Dysphoria, Pregnancy, Rape, Sexual assault, Addiction, Sexual violence, Child abuse, Grief, Physical abuse, and Death
If you're sensitive to self-destructive behavior, addiction, and sexual violence, I strongly advise against this book. They are main themes throughout this book.tguccione's review
