Gigi, bad ass collegiate hockey player, builds a relationship with self-proclaimed asshole and fellow stud hockey player, Luke Ryder. Their friends-with-benefits situation slowly evolves into them navigating some tricky situations on and off the ice.

3.5 stars. Idk this book just didn’t hit the same as The Deal. I had a hard time getting behind the FMC, she lacked substance to me.

For starters, If you didn't read the series before this starting with The Deal, just know that there is a series before it. I did not read that other series which seems fine. The Deal is a generation before this one so there are characters references and some easter eggs from what I gathered.

I really liked this one.  I had no expectations going in what it was going to be about. I will say it was spicier than I thought but like I said, that has more to do with me not knowing anything about it. I liked that it wasn't just a hockey romance. In this book both characters are hockey players and the main female POV works really hard to pave her own way even though it would be really easy for her to use her famous dad's name to get ahead. At one point she talks about how hard it is to be a woman in hockey because they aren't granted the same acclaim. When she was younger she dreamed about winning the Stanley Cup, only to find out that a woman can't.

There were parts that felt rushed or even brushed over. <Spoiler> like the part where they got married in Vegas but over all I felt like there was good pacing to the story.

Very rarely do I ever get so wrapped up in a romcom sports romance that I could totally see myself hanging out with these characters.

Elle knows how to create interesting, realistic characters including side characters that are both personable and diverse despite a large number of them. I found myself enjoying their random conversations and banter that I could totally see playing out very similarly in the real world. Some of the conversations had me laughing with how “real” they felt.

The storytelling had me engaged the entire time and was not held up by the pacing at all but balanced well with it. There was never a moment where I felt bored nor felt the need to put this down — it was almost impossible. In fact the only times I put it down was when the real world came knocking for my attention.

The writing itself was fluid and easy to digest rather quickly. It fit the story well and I particularly liked how the author used the interview format to cover portions of the plot.

Overall? This was sublime. Got me straight out of a reading rut. My only nitpick is that I wish we could have had a mini epilogue years later (
either with GiGi doing Team USA or with Ryder in the NHL
).

Edit: I JUST FOUND OUT THERE IS IN FACT AN EPILOGUE *shakes fist*
