Good read. The characters are very humanized and make it easy to feel for them, whether that be sadness, anger, understanding, and even joy.
The book is one hardship after another and you can't help but feel the heartbreak of the characters as their hope takes continuous blows and dwindles until the light at the end of the tunnel within the last 5 pages.

History Year Four (Modern). I really appreciated the frank storytelling in Goodbye, Vietnam. My eyes were opened to the plight of the Vietnamese refugees, so many of whom have settled in and around our valley.

Thirteen year old Mai narrates the story of her family's flight from their small village in Vietnam. They leave on a rickety, crowded boat headed for the safety of Hong Kong.

A peek into the lives of immigrants.

Mai and her family attempt to flee Vietnam when her grandmother is targeted by the Communist government. A touching look at the plight of the Vietnamese boat people as they attempt to flee Vietnam for freedom and safety. A charming tale of sacrifice and family.
