Sometimes genuinely funny, but all in all the strongest piece is the first few chapters that were originally published as a separate short story.

I read this book of linked short stories for the first tale in chapters 1-5, "The Harbormaster," as it's supposedly one of the inspirations for HP Lovecraft's "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", one of my all time favourite weird fiction tales.

It was an interesting story, although not too fleshed out; I did continue reading but the stories were quite samey (guy who works for a zoo goes on various specimen-collecting adventures, has a mini romance).

Interesting for the context and surprisingly readable!
