This book wasn't bad...but it really wasn't good either. The story is told from Gerry's perspective, and we jump from the present timeline to the past, though the past is not told in a linear timeline (it jumps from a scene in 2012 to one in 1976 to one in 1999, etc.). Gerry is not a likable guy, especially when you're looking inside his head. There were definitely many cringe moments for me when reading his thoughts. No one else we meet is really likable either, though maybe that's because we only know them from Gerry's POV. There's no development for anyone either; characterizations are done for the purpose of the plot only.

And the plot...the book was readable (only took me a few days to get through it), but by the end I was just left confused. Some actions by the villain just did not make sense to me. (
why on earth did Aileen kill Victoria?? Made no sense to me, because Victoria was threatening to tell Gerry, but then Aileen tells him everything anyways. And I get that she wanted his money, but they didn't plan on his accident—so what was their original plan?
) And then the ending was just too ridiculous for me and wrapped up so quickly that I was just left in disbelief.

The only thing that confused me more than the plot was the author's note at the end where she said this was her first time writing a horror book. I don't read horror books and even I knew that this isn't horror. *shrugs*
