I think this easily could’ve been a 4-star for folks who sincerely dig this kinda thing, but I’m not really one of them. I appreciated the writing style for sure — cheeky, pun-riddled, smart, cinematic, and a breeze to read — but the story itself was a little too … pointless?? I dunno. I enjoyed it and its witticisms, but can’t help feeling like it was still something of a waste of time.

Hiaasen is able to channel Trump (or Mastodon in the novel) perfectly. Sometimes mimicking something abhorrent is more difficult than something which is pristine. Trump, I mean Mastodon, is a truly dreadful public speaker and you’d think Trump wrote his dialogue himself within the novel (never mind the fact he’d likely accept the supposition that he did). Hiaasen has Mastodon sounding like a teenager with a fifth grade education which is perfect apery and extremely entertaining. Those were the parts of the book where I frequently laughed out loud; Trump’s dialogue. Hiaasen captures the buffoonery of this administration cogently and manages to write a great story at the same time.

The usual Hiaasen Florida craziness. Pythons, micro-dosing LSD, illegal immigrants, POTUS, affairs with secret service agents, rich widows, Potussies, and Skink. A fun little reading diversion with laugh out loud moments.

My first Hiaasen.

Quirky and satirical.

Hiaasen, I get it. You didn’t like Mastodon.

Loved Angela Armstrong.

It was a decent story, I like Skink though his role was very small for being a skink book but dude goes hard on the whole Trump is super racist, which he never was until the day he ran for president... and that was the only attack they had in the beginning... Trump is trash, I didn't vote for him and hope those morons pick someone better (I know they won't, even though there are a couple candidates that would be better, we are going to have to go through Trump vs. Biden part 2 because people are two party sheep and they are determines to but the worst candidates possible in the White House) but damn, I couldn't decide on if this book was written to tell a story or to bash Trump... if you are some Trump cultist, you won't like it because half the book of bashing him... if you are a leftist, you'll pleasure yourself while reading it because it follows the story you desperately need to believe because Trump lives rent free in your head... if you are like me and think Republicans are almost as trash as Democrats... it is decent read but you occasionally get pulled out of the story with how much Hiaasen is just leaning into making it a book about how much he hates Trump and kind of wants to fuck Melania.
