I think it's safe to say John Layman saved Detective Comics. The first two volumes are a sick, train wreck. As if DC turned one of their flagship titles over to the makers of the Saw films.
Layman approaches the world of Batman with an eye for detail and looks at Gotham holistically. He delivers a much needed left turn for the book.
