I think it’s really admirable the whole project Ali Smith undertook in creating the seasonal quartet and this companion piece — writing books in quick succession, reflecting contemporary life and having them published fast. She bears witness to the world in such an important way, calling out the corruption and also giving hope by bringing to light all the good.
The first half of the book didn’t work so well for me, I didn’t particularly care for the Martina Inglis character or her family, but I loved the second half. Beautiful work as always.
