As a standalone book, this is pretty good. Following up after book 1, way less so.

If you have read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", the lead characters in this book are replicants. The book attempts to humanise them, while continuing to explain that war is hell. The hellishness is repeated a bit too often for my taste, distracting from the growth of the lead character.

I received a copy of this book through the Goodreads First Reads program.

This was a really intense book. I loved the main character, Catherine. She was both very sympathetic and rather alien. The action is well paced, and exciting. I am looking forward to reading the final book in the series.

I liked the last leg of her journey best, when it was just her and the other girl in the woods. Their excitement over seeing a bear was great. I'm not wild about how she met her end, at the hands of the Americans, but I do feel like she needed to die at the end of the book. It didn't feel totally out of place, just slightly underwhelming for her to go quietly.
