This story follows a young woman named Eva. After she sees her father taken by the French Police, her and her mother go to a small little town in "Free France" to stay until they can get into Switzerland. But before they go, she has to forge travel papers for her mother and herself so they don't get caught. Once the get to this little town, the people there start to wonder about her and seek her out to see if she can help with the underground network they have to help Jews get to Switzerland and also hurt the Germans along the way. Eva know she needs to help, but her mother is persistent that they need to return to Paris to wait for her father.
Although she doesn't want to hurt her mother, she knows she must help. She begins this forgery operation with a young Catholic man name Remy, who she soon falls in love with. Her mother, who is unlike any character I've ever read (very angry, bitter and unwelcoming of her daughters willingness to help other Jews to freedom), thinks Eva is abandoning not only her family but her faith as well by helping "erase" the identities of the people she is forging documents for. This is when she gets the idea for the "Book of Lost Names" She and Remy find an old Catholic religious book and develop a code to record their real names along with the new names, so one day they can find out who they are and their families can find them.
This book was so beautiful, it was so emotional. Full of love and compassion and also heartache and much pain. <spoilers> It was so heartbreaking that her mother had died, but also the fact that her last words were that she was so proud to be her mother, even after she made it seem throughout the whole book that she was disappointed, was so heartbreaking and moving at the same time. What actually brought the tears, was the reunion with her father, even though they thought he was dead. The end of the book, when she was older and at the Library in Berlin to get her book, and Remy finds her (even thought she was told he was dead)!!! omg I can't with this...
I had goosebumps and was ugly crying the last few chapters!! you will love this book!!
Moderate: Death of parent, Genocide, Hate crime, and Racism
