This is the end of Ewing's run on Hulk. Immortal Hulk is a must read for cape comic fans in general. Great story, art, and characters. Ewing made Hulk's lore deeper by adding layers of supernatural. As a result, you got a package of great action and body horror comic.

Overall, this was a tight, successful wrap-up to one of the best major comic runs from the last few years. My favorite parts were where Ewing goes back to 1901 and we see some interesting origin stories unfold, reminiscent of what Scott Snyder has done with Dick Grayson, Alfred Pennyworth, and the Court of Owls. Seeing Joe Fixit "interact" (wink, wink) with Betty in her harpy form was great, and I just enjoyed learning some more history of these characters that don't get much (any?) attention in other Marvel titles. Yes, some of the final confrontation with the mysterious force behind the gamma-related immortality was a bit slow. There's a four-page fold-out scene that I was excited to find with my fingertips as I turned the page, but disappointed by what it revealed.

Immortal Hulk: Of Hell and Death collects Immortal Hulk 46-50.

Well, Al Ewing's Immortal Hulk run has reached its conclusion. Hulk and Ms. McGee head to hell using the Forever Gate and bring the metaphysical epic to its conclusion.

The art and writing were superb but my first thought upon finishing it was "That's it?" I guess Ewing's run was more about the journey than the destination. I was hoping for a big fight or something but to paraphrase something Red Hulk says in this volume "Sometimes, walking up and punching things doesn't work."

The last couple volumes were kind of a letdown but Ewing set the bar a little too high for himself during the 35-40 issues of the series. Still, Immortal Hulk is one of the better Big Two runs of the last 10-15 years.

Immortal Hulk: Of Hell and Death brings the series to a somewhat underwhelming conclusion. Three out of five stars.

So the run ends. I think given the way the series has built itself up, readers might've expected something more bombastic for a finale, but I always figured we'd get something a little more introspective, especially to wipe the slate relatively clean for the Donny Cates/Ryan Ottley rebranding. I'm thrilled with it. This might even be better than Peter David's run, but I also have a bias towards body horror and eldritch threats. A lesser writer might have made that penultimate issue feel padded, or the flashbacks to the Stern family in the 20th century a little contrived, but it all gels.

I've kind of already forgotten what happened at the end of this run, and didn't even realise it was the last volume when I was reading it. That said, it was always going to be difficult to stick the landing on such a great series, and it was much more about the journey than the ending anyway. It's hugely impressive to me that they managed to keep me engaged with a character I didn't care for and knew little about previously for 11 volumes! There's some amazing literary writing you don't normally find in a lot of comics throughout and stunning moments of horror and pathos consistently for the whole run. It doesn't even feel like a disappointing ending really, I'm just glad they wrapped it up and enjoyed the wild ride along the way. Highly recommended overall.

The end of this run just kinda fizzled out
