I'm looking for my Dungeon Crawler Carl fix and this was a fun romp.

This was a really enjoyable LitRPG that I almost put down and stopped reading in the first chapter. It started out really dark, and I was not prepared for [spoilers] assassination and cannibalism in the first five minutes. But once Nacho went back in time, I loved the story. I especially love everything about Reuben. I liked the narrator, too. He kept my interest and helped me differentiate between characters.

Loved it! Well written and fun to see the chef class in action! Devoured it quickly and went straight to book 2!

I love this whole idea. A system with a BRUTAL satiation system, where at one point cannibalism was rampant because it got so bad.

This is a part of LitRPG that I feel should be explored! I was so pumped, and overall this aspect I liked.

But there are problems. The system itself being unhelpful assholes was good in theory, and shows just how malicious it is because NOTHING gets explained. Everyone’s fumbling around, and I’m guessing like 75% of the world died just because they couldn’t figure things out in time. But I’ll admit it was so jarring, like, HOW did people figure this shit out and not die without foresight? Like seriously, its bad to the point of being ridiculous.

The system won’t even tell people the requirements to use skills sometimes!

But the big thing I didn’t like was the MC.

The MC not sharing his foresight with anyone outside his family? Okay fine, I get it. Him not telling his family all his knowledge? Okay, he’s got severe PTSD is afraid they’ll hate him and also doesn’t want to overwhelm them. This frustrated the hell outta me, but I think it also added to his persona as a deeply flawed person who continues to make mistakes. Seemed more realistic to me I guess.

I can deal with a LOT from morally grey / evil MC’s, in fact I usually love them.

But Nacho’s ATTITUDE?

God, he’s so arrogant it really pissed me off. Like, “I could totally do this all on my own“- when he ISN’T an assassin anymore! And how even though he is a SUPPORT type now that can do SHIT to monsters, he’s always on the battlefield. The first to run out like he’s the biggest baddass and he’s NOT okay!

Yeah, that was a letdown I admit. I was hoping he’d at least be able to battle by cutting off hunks of flesh with his skills like a ‘demonic chef’ but no cigar- so we have a ‘chef’ that can’t battle but wants to battle 😒

If you want that, make him able to battle. Or focus on the cooking aspect- because both are valid paths, and not sticking to one just makes me feel so… ugh.

And yeah, I get he has a lose moral compass, but the fact that he does ZERO preventive measures or get revenge just sits wrong with me. The fact that he didn’t do shit to his old Slave master also bothers me, along with his good opinion of him when everything we’re told just makes him out to be a really disgusting person with NO GOOD POINTS. Give some good points if you don’t want me to look at the MC reminiscing with disgust!

Enough of that. I will say, that IN SPITE OF THE FLAWS, overall it was a decent read. A good effort in this genre, and worth a try I suppose- for the concept alone! But I myself find myself iffy on continuing. I want to know, kinda, what happens. But I really can’t stand the MC. We’ll see.

I hope this review is helpful!
