Polar Melt is a competently written compact military suspense novel with science fiction and folkore woven through it. It was easy to get immediately drawn into it, and the pace at which the story moved meant it was hard to put down. There is just something appealing about a shorter novel where you know you’re not going to have to invest hours to get a potentially satisfying read.

The characters are likable enough, if a bit generic feeling. They are separated into two teams: military and civilian. They include everything from the hardened military lifer to sexy and competent single female that immediately falls into a relationship. Also, of course, the young genius who can pull any skill out the team might need out of thin air because he is The Young Genius.

One of the things that I really liked about Polar Melt was something I can’t go into too much detail about because it’d be spoilers. Of course. However, what I will say was that I felt the way he thought about what he experienced felt very realistic.

The action was nicely done, especially the finale. The dialogue was believable. The object they discovered was fascinating to imagine. The broad details the author gives the reader are enough to sketch it out in their heads. This felt like it could transition to the screen with very few problems.

Overall, while I can’t say that Polar Melt: A Novel thrilled me, it was a very pleasant way to spend two hours. This would be – like many Patterson novels – a perfect book to pick up for a plane ride or car trip.
