Covering the first 25 years or so of Star Trek, this oral history covers the creation and recreation of Star Trek through all the highs and lows. Like many oral histories it’s a bit scattered, but the authors do a nice job of filling in any gaps missed by the interviews, and allowing multiple perspectives of events when they are at odds.

I’m a mid-level fan, having seen most of the episodes and movies, but not exhaustively so. As such, I learned a lot, especially about some of the backstage drama and projects that never really lifted off. (Pun intended.)

Highly recommended for fans of the series and/or people that enjoy oral histories.

It read like a round table discussion and considering that half the people they interviewed are dead it made it a bit awkward. The formatting was odd but made it a quick read. There are no citations for past interviews or possible magazine interviews.

I did learn a lot about the behind the scenes on what it took to put everything together.

A must if you’re a Trekkie!

This was a fascinating read of the creativity, politics and business that helped create a billion dollar pop culture franchise. If you’re a fan of Star Trek you must read this book!

2.5 stars. I found a lot of interesting and annoying quips from folks within this book. I liked the section breakdowns and the clear desire by the author (who are more like an editor) to pull together facts, quotes and comments without much sidebar commentary.

The half a star deduct from a 3 comes from the lack of new information. Much has already been shared. The value here is in covering similar ground in a dialog format. Good fun, but nothing critical.

Great oral history of the Original Star Trek series starting with the 1960s broadcast, working through the animated series, rise of conventions and aborted follow up series and ending with the Motion Pictures (TMP - VI). Great behind-the-scenes look at the politics, struggles and successes of an iconic show.
