I had a disappointing start to my reading year, but thanks to aspiring actress Peggy Lane, it’s getting better.

For the time it was written (early 1960s), Peggy’s story is not nearly as stereotypical as it could be. Peggy decides she wants to become an actor, so she and her parents strike a bargain that she can try it for one year. If she’s successful, she can continue; if she’s not, she’ll return to college. After helping her move to NYC, they trust that she’s mature enough to take care of herself.

There’s a bit of intrigue, but most of the fun in the story comes from Peggy experiencing NYC and meeting other people in the theater. I’ll definitely be reading the rest of the series.

I picked this up in the thrift store because 1) it references theater, and 2) it's bound very similarly to my old Nancy Drews; it may be another Strattemeyer series, and I am ALL about that.

--the thrift store owner gave it to me for free, just for coming in--

I wasn't sure what I would think of this but it was really quite good. Peggy is a likable heroine. I do have to say that I have never quite read a book about a theater student with so little well theater in it. The mystery was a tad unbelievable but that didn't mean it wasn't enjoyable.
