Some of the most masterfully crafted prose in fantasy.

Istfg I almost threw my tablet against the wall when the audiobook ended. Wtf!!! Did I imagine this having a sad ending? Probably. Was I ready for a sad ending? Definitely not!! Omggggg!!!

Anyway. Deep breath.

First thing first. I'd die for Demane. He is a cinnamon roll. A cutie. A softie. Secondly, Isa and his lovely voice, I want to listen to his lovely voice like D did.

Having just finished listening to the audiobook, I firmly believe that if you are a lover of anything Ursula K Le Guin and her Hainish cycle you are probably gonna love this. It kept reminding me of Rocannon's World and Planet of Exile, with hints of The Left Hand of Darkness. Fans of Samuel R Delany's Nova will possibly like this as well.

The gods are real and they walked the earth. The gods left, leaving behind their children, each group in separate colonies and each sharing different powers. Our main character, Demane the so called Sorcerer, leaves his colony and wanders the various lands. He meets and instantly falls in love with Isa, so called Captain (for he captains a group of guards). He decides, there and then, to forever follow him, so they both embark on a journey as protection for a merchant caravan through a desert and the Wildeeps, a magical inter dimensional jungle.
The narration is non linear, and we get to know more about the world and the characters through stories, chapters intros and D's introspective thoughts.

I have to really give thanks and compliment the audiobook narrator, Kevin Free, for his performance. Sir, if you'll ever read this review know that I'd have probably enjoyed this story way less without your voices.

Long story short: after weeping I will look for more books written by mr Wilson and more audiobooks narrated by mr Free.

Hot scale: there are some sex scenes, not very explicit if I remember correctly, but very sweet.

The Sorcerer of the Wildeeps is a heart-rending story set in a fantasy world based on North African cultures. It's full of rich world-building, interesting characters, and omg that ending!! (And never forget the cool dinosaur fight scene! 🙌) Loved it!!

I enjoyed this book immensely.

The star of this book is the world building. The setting is reminiscent of North Africa or perhaps the Middle East, which sets it apart from many books right away. In addition, there are tantalizing references to science fiction concepts like FTL travel and genetic manipulation, leading one to wonder about the history of this place.

In the tradition of Tolkien, this book also makes use of various languages and dialects to stand in for the setting's various tongues. It helps the similarities and differences between the various characters stand out without spelling them out, a nice trick.

Sadly, not for me. I felt that at the halfway point, the book broke apart from there.

A charming little story with an interesting fantasy world that makes you want to know more. The main character is quite likeable, and the relationship with the supporting characters, including the love interest, shows a good hand at depicting interpersonal relationships.

Where the author falls short is in his awkward prose - his sentence construction is, at several points, un-intuitive and hard to understand. There's a way for the words to run smoothly and leap off the page, and he doesn't have the knack for it.
