I like sci-fi, and I like classic sci-fi, but I couldn't get into this. Not a lot happened, and throughout the story the things that did happen were happening because the plot called for it, not because the characters acted of their own volition. It was also really heavy on exposition.

This book was a very interesting tale of the twilight of two civilizations, and how they got to that point. Clarke introduces sci-fi concepts seen in many future stories, including the danger of entrusting true understanding to machines, machine intelligence. This was all the more impressive given that he published the book in 1948, and is another example of Clarke being ahead of his time.

Can't get enough of it

A story that takes place a billion years in the future? A billion years! That's just insane. Clarke was a true master.
