I'm not personally partial to psychological thrillers, grotesque imagery, or mind ****'s. That being said, I am sure that those who like a good mind **** will enjoy this.
I thought the book was well done, and I was invested in Misty as a character. I read the book in 2 days, so it was an easy read. Some reviewers didn't like the way Palanhiuk spoke at the reader, but I didn't feel that way. To me, Misty was speaking to her husband, via her diary, and being on the receiving end of that made her all that more concrete.
I loved all the facts about human anatomy and historical artists. I may take out a book on Graphology.
What I didn't like was the fact that the story was sooo far-fetched. I couldn't understand why the islanders chose that method to protect their future. It seemed like there must be some other way to accomplish the same goal. While it was a fun read, the story itself seemed contrived.

A quick read but not quite as good as the other Palahniuk
novels that I have read. The book starts out as a confusing read but things become clearer as the story proceeds. The novel is told in the form of the diary of Misty Wilmont, a former artist living in a small island community. It's creepy with a vibe similar to a Hitchcock film.

Hollywood has made us accustomed to getting the resolution to a cycle. When a story involves a legend that happens over and over, we're usually watching the final time. The one that breaks the cycle. If you like stories with happy endings wrapped up in a nice little bow, this isn't what you're looking for. There's a faint hint of maybe a happy ending later down the road, but you're reading about someone smack dab in the middle of the cycle of pain and torture. I like that, you might not. Palahniuk has plenty of other (much better) books, sure, but this one is good enough to deserve a read as well. Though, my favorite Palahniuk book is Lullaby which most people seemed to dislike, so if you want to take my opinion with a grain of salt I'd understand.

This is the third book by Palahniuk I decided to read. "Haunted" was my first try, and I thoroughly, genuinely liked it. "Invisible Monster" was a fight with a big reward waiting for me in the end.

After this one, I may need to take a long break before finally getting to "Fight Club".

I love the fact that I may refer to Palahniuk as the most innovative language designer of this and, maybe, the past century. But sadly, referring to this book, it may well be the only thing I love about him.

I was tired of reading this endless writing style exercise leading to a shallow plot twist in the end. The whole story may be summarized in 3 sentences, the character development and depth equals nothing, and the shocking disgusting parts are getting older with each Palahniuk's book I attempt to enjoy.

I didn't like it. I need a break.
