Genre(s): Post-Apocalypse Survival Thriller
I highly recommend checking out this review by Goodreads user Ez, as they did an amazing job providing an overview of the book.
As for my personal thoughts and feelings: this book has me on the edge of my seat. I spent the majority of it just waiting for the other shoe to drop, for the world to be plunged into complete chaos, yet by the end of the book we still hadn’t rounded the curve into anarchy. Granted, we only cover a time span of ten days, but for some reason I was still surprised that the local law enforcement was still actively trying to solve a homicide case, getting warrants from judges, practicing crime scene etiquette, and maintaining the chain of custody.
In terms of our main characters: Shiloh was my favorite, closely followed by Eli. I wish there were more interactions between the two of them. And can we appreciate Eli’s inner monologue regarding Shiloh:
I also liked Jackson (even though he had some serious faults and weaknesses; one of them being that he lets his family treat him like a doormat, but he turned his back on Eli). However, for some unknown reason, I didn’t really care for Lena. It could be that I’m subconsciously emotionally distancing myself from her out of fear that she’ll die—which is horrible and unfair of me. (What can I say?—I have trust issues due to [a:Sarah Lyons Fleming] and her Until the End of the World series.)
