weird fucking book. it took me quite a while to wrap my head around the narrative structure - it wasnt at all what i expected. that it was constantly suprising was a delight. however, the tone taken was quite dark and pessimistic, the characters generally unlikeable - but i was surprised to find myself brought around to most of them in the end. and while pessimistic, it never goes so far to be unbelievable, or overly grim. its just WEIRD! for me, it came together in the final third, and made me cry and very emotional, and has some brilliant concepts. i dont mean to say the first two thirds are bad though, just not what I expected. I desperately want someone else to read this, so they know what i mean. im not sure if its a book for dog lovers or haters - i think both will be surprised by it.

Bizarre, interesting and engaging. Those three words come to my mind whenever I reflect back on Fifteen Dogs. I was hesitant to read this book because I'm not much into stories with animals as the main characters. Very few animal driven books appeal to me. This one, however, quickly dispelled my hesitation.

I was immediately drawn into the lives of fifteen dogs. I found it absolutely fascinating to see how the dogs related to each other once they took on human consciousness. They are pack animals by nature, they tended to stay that way. They were cut-throat too which was rather disturbing. They were blunt, and crude at times. They lived in an in-between state. Some dogs took this new consciousness better than others. Some adapted and others were fearful of the change. I became fond of Majnoun, he made the book. I really liked him and was utterly surprised when I discovered his breed. Yeah, a little dog bias I am is what I discovered.

I came away from Fifteen Dogs greatly entertained. I came away from this book with a need to pause and wonder about my own dog. Maybe, just maybe, Bambi thinks we humans are rather silly and confusing. And maybe she has a lot of thoughts going on in that mind of hers, especially when she is staring straight on at us.

I liked this bizarre, engaging and interesting story.

The ending wasn’t as impactful to me as Majnoun’s life/death, and since I was so captivated by that part the end fell a little flat for me. But I really enjoyed the story as a whole.

Really wanted to love it as a lover of dogs and mythology but it didn’t really do it for me. Not a bad book at all just didn’t quite live up to expectations. Had a bit of an issue with how the author portrayed dogs and their psychology/behavior but not everyone has the same opinions there and that’s fair.
