This book had SO much potential, but it was a real let down for me.

It was the perfect premise- two supposedly straight cops, who supposedly hate each other, forced to go undercover as a gay couple, in a gay community, to find a murderer. Only you know what they say, there's a thin line between love and hate, right? Awesome premise, even if it has been done before.

However, our closeted cops are pretty much interchangeable. They are both gay, both in the closet to protect their careers, both have female partners on the job, both confided the truth about themselves after six months of working together, both even have the same habit of extending each other's names, "Scott so hot I can't stand it Turner", "Will why did I have to fall for the straight guy Harrison"(those are just examples, not actually used in the book).

Then there was the community, this gay Stepford Community, they infiltrated. So many names to learn, and other than Todd and Brent, they were pretty much the same, too. I admit, I didn't guess the baddie, but only because I couldn't tell the guys apart, and I figured Brent's abrasive personality was a red herring. The men in this community had NO boundaries, coming and going in each other's homes a they pleased, kissing and grabbing each other. It was all pretty skeezy and gross, even the sex parties. Not hot in the least.

The UST between Will and Scott was the best part of the story, and the only reason I gave this 2 stars. You could feel how much they wanted each other, and once they finally came together, it was super hot (if a bit unrealistic, three orgasms, one right after the other, with absolutely no recovery time?? These guys aren't teenagers!)

The story ended in such a way that I want to know who the other baddie is, but probably not enough to spend the money. Maybe I can beg a loan from someone?

*Re-read 10/12/14 for Re-romancing the Faves Challenge - I'm updating this one to 5 stars. I loved the tension between Scott and Will, and I even forgot who the psycho was, so it surprised me again.

*Originally read in March 2012 - I loved all of the characters in this book except Jay of course, and I am so glad that it wasn't Marcus who was abusing Todd, because like Scott and Will, I really did like him. I hope this author continues this story since she left a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of this one. I'd love for the rest of the guys to get their own stories, and I'd love for Erik to get a new man and a HEA.

As for Scott and Will, I loved that they were both completely blind to the other being gay and also wanting him. I just wanted to sit them both down and say hello idiots... please just admit you want each other... why else would you both be acting so nuts?!

Laurel Heights should have ticked all my boxes. 2 alpha, macho….however you say manly men detectives; with an antagonistic relationship, an enemies to lovers theme – working together to solve a murder. What’s not to love? Except that sadly, the execution was just “meh” for me and it spiraled down from a solid 3.5 stars to a 2.5. There are 2 more books in the series, and this one ended on one hell of a cliffhanger: and yet – I’m done.

Scott Turner and Will Harrison are both closeted detectives on the White Plains Police Department. Only their female partners know the truth about their orientation. Scott’s in the closet because his father was a colossal homophobic, bigoted asshole. Will, is lucky to have loving, supportive parents; but he’s seen how not welcoming the Fraternal Order of Police can be when it comes to diversity and decided it was in the best interest of his career to play it straight. Scott pretends to be a world class womanizer bragging loudly about his conquests. Will has a made up girlfriend and a perfect picket fence, nothing to see here so move along, pretend life mapped out for his work colleagues. They loathe each other. Likely because underneath the loathing is an intense, never to be requited – attraction.

Things heat up when Will and Scott have to go undercover, pretending to be a gay couple to infiltrate the Laurel Height’s gay community in order to investigate a murder-suicide. Laurel Heights is one weird set up. Not because it’s a gated community catering exclusively to gay men. And not because the Homeowner’s Association (if you will) requires participation in monthly gatherings that consist of orgies and partner-swapping. It’s a weird set up because the other 4 couples who live in this 5 house community’ have absolutely no sense of personal boundaries. I get that they’re all friends; although Will and Scott are new to the mix; but I couldn’t get past how incredibly intrusive they were. They just walk into each other’s houses uninvited and unexpected and grope each other uninvited. It felt less like the kink community and more like a cult.

My real issue however comes down to Will and Scott. The story is told with alternating points of view and we get to get inside both their heads. I wish we didn’t. My manly men are whiny little bitches. They’re also the worst detectives ever. They have like zero training. When the shit hit’s the fan, they are completely unprepared. The level of cluster-fuckery things dissolve into is more shocking than finding out the identity of the murderer. There is however a HEA. The cliffhanger is intriguing and I’d love to know who the new acolyte is – but not enough to read the next book.

It was pretty good. I loved the whole Scott "straight as a ruler" Turner & Will "so straight he sleeps standing up" Harrisson etc. banter they kept on going through their heads to refer to each other at moments. Always cracked (no pun intended) me up. The whole murder mystery - for me you kind of can guess who it is, but it's still like "are you sure? sure sure?" until he comes right out and says it. Recommended!

SpoilerAnd that ending, seriously... When you read it you'll see but GOD! is that guy a fuckin' asshole!!!!
BTW. Does anyone else think David might be that Mr. Kent?! I mean, he had bruises and everything mentioned in the beginning of the novel??? Right??? Omg, the villains in this novel are such SOBs, for real!

Wow this book was as good as everyone is saying. I loved it and both Will and Scott were so hot together. I mean smokin' hot . The ending didn't surprise me like it did a lot of people not because it wasn't written well, but tell me there's a twist or something exciting happens and I will guess it, LOL I guessed the twist in "The Sixth Sense" I do that with all movies, hehe. It was a page turner though and I really hope there's another book coming. I'm not saying anymore than this you have to read it:-) Not surprised I enjoyed it I love Lisa's books.
