The relationship between the three characters is sweet but not sweet enough to get me through the longer sections about math and baseball.

This is one of those books that demanded an immediate review. It's my first Ogawa and I am definitely sure not my last. I am looking at her latest: Revenge - for something completely different from this one.
The Housekeeper and the Professor can only be described as a treat and a privileged gift. Written from the perspective of the unnamed housekeeper, this deeply evocative and endearing tale of the relationship that develops between the housekeeper, the professor she is hired to look after, and her son. One of the aspects that makes the tale unique is that the professor has suffered severe memory damage and any memories after the accident reset every 80 minutes. His intellectual faculties have not been affected, but the 80 minutes gradually reveal much more about the Professor's nature as the book unfolds. I will not speak more to the plot itself.
The beauty of numbers and mathematical relationships are connected to everyday life in a clever, but deeply moving way, and through this, we are invited into the relationship that develops between these three in a way that transcends the 80-minute rule.
A book that makes you think and also feel - absolutely beautiful.

Truly a moving tale about love, memory, and found family. The way the author uses math and baseball to illustrate the relationships being built throughout the story as well as the way time shaped the events of the plot was incredibly moving. I loved this book way more than I anticipated.

A thoughtful, gentle novella that radiates kindness and friendship. I know some people have found it quite sad but I actually just found it beautiful. It's a contented sigh of a novel.

adorable and heartwarming. A beautiful, deeply moving exploration of what it really means to know someone and form a relationship with a person who loses their memory every eighty minutes. The themes of found family, friendship, memory, and love are so well done, this book defines what it means to be human and to love. The way math is used as a poetic device??? I never thought I would be this interested in math. I’m being so dramatic but this is my favorite book ever. I was so scared that the professor would lose his affection for Root as he grew up, but I’m so glad they were still close. The ending >>>>>
Literally in shambles over this book, its memory would stay with me for years to come.
