I enjoyed this book a lot. There was a good buildup of sexual tension, and a lot of character growth and stuggles to overcome.

I do have a different idea of how I would have liked it to end, and it being a two arc duet instead of a single book wrapped up at the end.

If you haven't read the book yet, then disregard the following and don't read it because it spoils the ending and I write what I would have liked to have seen instead.

Spoiler The ending where Jessica takes the serum and retains her 3-mark status, and everyone gets their HEA was a bit too easy for me. I would have loved to have seen her take the serum for reasons that are easy to overcome, but still take the serum and then the book ends. The next book would have her going about her life but "missing something" and having Mason trying to stay away from her, but failing. The book would be the story of him courting her and trying to get her to be his servant. I don't exactly know, but there is more there than just a simple HEA that could have been told

This is an important Vampire Queen book that shouldn't be overlooked and skipped. Great series all around!

This book is really well written
I loved how deep the character development was. We could see how Jes's psyche started to heal and how her attachment to Farida's story, which was what saved her, could also be a shackle in the long run. A crutch that helps you to stand at first, but prevent you to walk again on your own leg if used too long. And same with Mason. I really appreciated how protective he was and how he really learned to care for her. And it was nice to see how he was able to free himself from Farida's memory, who was a shackle for him as well. And I like how they did that, without however disgarding her importance in their life or forgetting about her. Just learning to move on. However, given Jess' past it also made even more annoyed by the fact that she would be his servants.

Their relationship just wasn't good enough to make me forget the pile of shit that it's the position of a servant. If anything, given the FL situation it just make it worse that she returns to be one. Something that is truly made clear in the later part of the story.

Warning: in this series Vampires are attracted by both men and women, altough they may have a preference. Furthermore servants themselves often have sexual scenes with people of the same sex. Sometimes, they don't really have an attraction for the opposite sex but are still "aroused" by the fact that in this way they pleasure their "Master/Mistress". Other ther times they actually are attracted by people of the same sex. This means that you can have M/M scenes, F/F scenes or threesomes (FMF, MFM). In this book there are MFM sex scenes and also F/F. Jess in particular is bisexual, so there are situation in this book where she is attracted by women.

This is a comprehensive review of the first eight books in the series.

Passionate, raw, often painful to read. Hill takes D/s to a supernatural level that knows no bounds. The world she creates is haunting and addicting, rife with floggers, whips, paddles and fangs. It hurts so good, stabbing way down in the deep dark squishy part of the soul.

Re-read:
This book can be read stand-alone. We met Mason briefly in The Mark of the Vampire Queen (Vampire Queen, #2) this story happens some months after that. Jessica was forced into becoming a vampire servant and endured the horrid depravity at the hands of her master. She would escape into her imagination through the stories of Farida and her lover. She survives her masters death at her hands and escapes into the Saharan Desert looking for Farida’s tomb. She goes there to die but is instead saved by Lord Mason Farida’s lover and an ancient vampire. They both have issues but could ultimately end up saving each other. This is another darkly sensual tale in the Vampire Queen series.

I've been looking forward to reading this book for a while and it did not disappoint. Immensely better than the third book. IMMENSELY better.
